Artie Shaw (CT); Charlie Spivak (CT); Randy Brooks (ME); Bobby Hackett (RI); and Mal Hallett (MA). The big band era was one of the most exciting periods in American musical history. And many of the finest performers of the day came from New England. Several of their significant and memorable recordings will be played and discussed. (Dr. Kane’s great-aunt Rosie established the Roseland Ballroom in Taunton, MA, for many years a major big-band venue.)
Dr. Steven M. Kane received his doctorate in Cultural Anthropology from Princeton University. He is a psychotherapist in private practice in Providence and a part-time professor of anthropology at URI and RIC. A professional jazz pianist, he is experienced as a jazz educator, record reviewer, and keyboard teacher. He is the founder and director of the Life-Enrichment Center of New England.
