Susan Heuck Allen, Ph.D. is a classical archaeologist focusing on the history of archaeology. Allen teaches at Smith College and is a Visiting Scholar at Brown University. Nationally, she chairs the Women in Archaeology Subcommittee of the Archaeological Institute of America, has chaired its Archives Committee and served as the President of its Narragansett Society. She has served locally on the Board of Directors of the Providence Athenaeum. She has worked in Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, and Israel and swam the Hellespont, from Asia to Europe in 1997. She lectures internationally for the Archaeological Institute of America and locally for EnRICHment. Her first book, Finding the Walls of Troy, received both scholarly and popular acclaim with the History Book Club. Her second, Excavating Our Past, (2002), looks at the history of American archaeologists. Allen has received several grants from national organizations, such as a Senior Fellowship with the National Endowment for the Humanities and Fulbright fellowship to Cyprus. As the mother of four teenagers, she brings both a scholarly background and community-based perspective to the council.
